It's Okay Not to Be Okay
This year I think it’s important to believe this statement: It’s okay not to be okay.
There is this idea that when you are a Christian, nothing but positivity should come out of you. This isn’t wrong, but it can sometimes be dangerous. Trying to stay positive in life, especially in times of trouble, does not mean that one can act as though their problems don’t exist. It is important to find a healthy way to cope with what you’re going through.
Mental health seems to always be a touchy subject for Christians, especially when it comes to mental health problems. People often don’t want to appear as weak, or feel as though they’re burdening others with their problems. Some people may not even share because they don’t believe it’s something a Christian should be dealing with. The thing is….we’re human. These things happen. We feel, we hurt. It’s part of our nature. And as Christians, we need to do a better job of being sensitive to those who are dealing with these issues. Churches have hurt so many people who are dealing with mental health issues to the point where those who are hurting don’t even feel as though they can talk about it anymore. And it’s not okay. We need to be more understanding of these things so we aren’t making people feel any worse than they already do.
We need to create safe spaces for these people, and if we are not in the space to directly assist those who are in need then we need to direct them to safe spaces. As the quote in the picture states, “mental health is everyone’s business.” Brushing passed, muffling, or dismissing someone’s feeling is not love. Making sure those around us are okay, healthy in every aspect, is love. And if we are to love everyone, we need to show them that we care.
It’s time to allow these conversations. It’s time to let people know they are heard and loved. It’s time to help those in need. It’s time to take care of God’s people.
Much love always,
Kumam
