Is Luck Real?
“Lucky I’m in love with my best friend”
“You’re lucky I’m saved!”
“Good luck!”
I remember last finals season I said, “Good luck,” to one of my friends, Aaron. His reply wasn’t something I was expecting because I didn’t really think about what I said, it was more of a reaction. He kinda looked at me like this
and said, “I don’t believe in luck. Do you?” And it really got me thinking. Should Christians believe in “luck”?
I did my googles and it defines luck as “success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions.” Do things in our lives really happen “by chance”? Or was it strategically planned ot the point where Someone knew that you would be right where you are at this moment in time reading this sentence?
I don’t always think certain things are that deep, but I really sat and thought about this luck thing after that conversation with my friend and had to internalize its meaning and the world’s usage of it. As Christians, we know that God is the Conductor of our lives. He orchestrates everything happens to us. Our first breath, our last, and every single thing in between. Things don’t really “just happen”, God planned them. Things didn’t really occur “coincidentally”, God put it together. After talking to some other people and also to God, I got to the conclusion that believing in luck undermines the power of God. I know that for some people, after reading that last sentence, they’re probably thinking “it’s not that deep”, but honestly….it is.
God has revealed to us time and time again in his Word that He knows even the smallest things about us (Luke 12:7), He is making things work out for us (Romans 8:28), and that He already has planned our lives out (Jeremiah 29:11). These are just a few examples of hundreds of affirmations that He is all-knowing. This means that things really don’t happen, God made it happen.
This is all to say, how we think and how we speak, as believers, is very very important. It’s easy to let something like “Wow, you’re so lucky” to roll off the tongue, but essentially we’re crediting something that God did to “outside forces” or the “universe” *yikes* We need to shift our minds and fix our hearts on the FACT that God has our lives planned out and knows exactly everything that will happen to us down to the second and realize that crediting things to “luck” puts His power in an undeserving place. What we say matters and we need to remember it starts inside. Believe with your heart that God did it for you, then declare it with your mouth! In doing this you’re not only giving Him the credit He deserves, but you’re also sharing a testimony of His great works, which can lead to more brothers and sisters in Christ!
Much love always,
Kumam ❤️
