Put Him First
School just started for me this week and one thing I can tell you is that there’s something different about this year. People are in great spirits and are looking forward to how this semester will go for them. Many have set goals like “Get a 4.0” or “Make Dean’s List” or “Get More Sleep” or even “Use Time Better”. All these are great goals to have. I also want all these things and even more, but one thing that we may forget is simply to tell ourselves, “Put God first.” Putting God first in our lives is the key to success, not just in school but in every aspect of our lives. Putting God first causes everything else to fall into place (Proverbs 3:6, look at the Tree of Life Version). We just need to trust, believe, and work towards that goal and see how our lives radically change for the better.
God knows what’s best for us and it’s always what he wants for us. Who else could we better trust than the Creator of everything and the One who holds our future? He takes your worries away and gives you the peace that passes all understanding. He takes our fears and helps us to build character from it. He knows and hears our hearts and grants us our desires. He loves us with an unconditional love that none can fathom. It’s amazing how much we let go, when we let God.
Here’s tips on how to put God first this year:
1. Pray and Talk to God About Everything
Prayer doesn’t have to formal. It can be as simple as you want it to be. It’s between you and God. He’s your friend, confidant, Father, & everything in between so talk to him in the way you please. Don’t forget to praise him as much as you plead to him. Don’t forget to thank him as well.
2. Spend Time With Him
Any good relationship requires time spent with each other. God wants that from us too! There’s many ways to spend time with God (prayer, music, bible reading, etc). Find your ideal environment to spend time with Him and do it every day. In this way, you’ll get to know Him for yourself and recognize his nature. A great time to do this is in the morning. Make it a habit, it really shapes your day! If you do it one day you forget, you’ll notice the difference.
3. Read Your Bible
It’s so important to know what God wants to tell us. The Bible is literally the answer to every problem we face, every situation we go through, and every story we live. God gives us answers we just need to have a desire to find them. Also, there’s so many promises God makes to us in His word. Learn them, love them, and live them.
4. Make going to church, a youth group, campus ministry service a priority.
It is vital to surround yourself with people that want the same things you want. It’s important to be an environment where there are other like-minded Christians to help in your spiritual journey. Being part of a group or church is a blessing that many people miss out on. By joining, you gain accountability partners, people to pray for you, people to praise with you, spiritual leaders, and God-centered friendships. There’s power in fellowship and where 2 or 3 are gathered, He is there with you (Matthew 18:20) .
All these things are things I’ve learned are the way my life will change for the better. I pray that you’re able to achieve all you desire in this year. You can do it, just remember to put Him first.
Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met (Matthew 6:33, MSG).
