Just a Vapor

We always talk about the far off future, as if those years have been guaranteed to us. But we truly know they’re not, so we remind ourselves to live life to the fullest now, because it’s short. If that’s the case, why do we keep putting off pursuing a relationship with God?

I used to think I had so much time for this “getting serious about God” thing. I grew up in the church and I always thought it was cool to learn about God and gain all this knowledge, but didn’t think I needed it until I was an adult. I thought this church/faith thing was preparation for future days when I wasn’t with my parents anymore and had a family of my own.

When I got to HS, though, something changed. I had an encounter with God and He showed me that I could have a relationship with Him right now. I always remember seeing others so into worship and so excited and on fire for Jesus and always saying, I can’t wait ‘til I’m like that, but what I didn’t realize that the only thing stopping me from being like them was myself.

It’s so easy for us to fall into a habit of pushing God to the side because we’ve learned He’ll always be there. But why would we defer something that could change our lives in such an amazing way? We tell ourselves, “That God thing is cool, but let me ‘enjoy’ myself now.” or “I’ll get it all out of my system now and when I get older, I’ll start.” We somehow convince ourselves that growing stronger in our faith can wait, as if we’re the ones in control of our lives.

And yes God can and will forgive us for anything we’ve done wrong in His sight, but if we knew we were doing things that someone didn’t like, wouldn’t we stop out of respect? (See James 4:17). The things of this world cannot satisfy us the way God can satisfy us. We just need to see it for ourselves. And it’s okay to mess up. It happens to all of us at some point, but the best thing about God is that He will never turn His back on us because of our faults. In fact, God uses our faults and our darkest moments as a way to strengthen us and also help others.

I hope that, if you haven’t already, will decide to live a life for Christ now, instead of waiting until later. We never know what tomorrow may bring, or if we’ll even get a chance to see it.
