Fall '19 Finals Affirmations Day 2 by Jonathan Johnson

“I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121: 1-2

This time of the semester always produces immense stress. It’s so close to Christmas break and the only thing holding us back from being with our loved ones is final exams. No matter how much you’ve studied, there’s always a tinge of uncertainty looming overhead. I’ve simply stopped by to let you know today that you aren’t facing this situation alone.

A lot of us are like David in this Psalm, looking for help. We’ve turned to our friends, significant others, parties, and even organizations and ministry but none of those are getting it done. None of those are permanently alleviating the pressure, but temporarily numbing the area. What are we to do in moments like this?! David tells us that he looked to the hills, but couldn’t find comfort there. Hills are anything we try to lean on outside of God for help. So all of those things I’ve mentioned before are solely resources.

When we attempt to depend solely on the resource for help, instead of the source, chaos ensues. So as we’re turning through those study guides racking our brains trying to get this information in, I want to admonish you to look beyond the hills. Beyond those physical resources and draw from the source. God has known about you before your mom and your dad met and did the thing grown folks do to bring you here. He’s had a purpose for you before He even made heaven or earth. No matter what the outcome is of these exams, it’s not enough to separate you from His love. And I need you to abide in that. He’s able and willing to help you if you’d reach out to you. David easily could’ve said his help came from the Lord and that would’ve been enough, but he got specific here to make sure it was etched in eternity that no one else but the God of heaven and earth could aid him. As you prepare for your exams, know that the God who created everything from nothing is walking with you. He’s already gone before you. So don’t stress yourself out, you’ve been empowered to get this done. So study hard and wrap this up so that you can enjoy this holiday season and a well-earned rest. I love you, I’m praying for you and be blessed.
