Words of 2020

*Please note parts of this post started in January, so the beginning will have a New Year feel, but once we get to the actual words of 2020, we get to February’s writing*

Hello! Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2020! The year of clarity, the year of vision. Get it because 2020…okay let’s move on.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely 2020. I feel like I haven’t spoken to you since last year *slaps knee* Nah, but like really, hmu sometime soon. Okay, forreal. Let’s move on.

I know that with a new year comes new things: resolutions, habits, goals, dreams, people, experiences, etc. And for me, a new year always means a new focus. My goal for each year, in general terms, is just to become a better version of myself. Of course, this can be done in many ways, so I usually have a list of smaller goals that add up to this one. If you’ve ever been in my room, s/o to you lucky few, you’ll see it on my wall, along with Scriptures and some other quotes/prompts I need as daily reminders. This helps me to keep my focus on what I desire for this year.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a dreamer. It’s lovely and it’s not at the same time. I can have such great ideas, but I can fall short when it comes to execution. So having these words, help me to focus on a few things to do well, versus trying to do a whole lot and accomplishing little to nothing in 12 months.

For 2020, my three words are:

  • Intimacy- Have you heard the song, Communion? This song is on Maverick City Music’s Volume II album, and whew! I remember listening to this song for the first time. The lyrics really spoke to me because one of my desires in my relationship with Christ is to be known as a friend of God, just like Abraham (see James 2:23). I want to have a deeper relationship with God where there’s no secrets or shame between us, where I really talk to Him every day at any time, where I fully trust Him and He can trust me, and we don’t disappoint each other. Essentially, there’s just a new level of my relationship with God, that I’d like to have and I’m hoping that this year I can really put a dent in building that kind of relationship

    • Scripture references: Psalm 63:1-8, James 4:8, John 15:4

  • Discipline - Whew chile, I don’t got it, but with Christ all things are possible! There’s a lot that needs to be done in this life. And without structure, it’s hard. I’m a dreamer. I would love to not only be a dreamer but a doer as well. I know some of the things that God has called me to do, but I also know I’ve only seen a glimpse. And with knowing there’s more, I need to crack down on forming good habits and deading the bad ones, so that I can achieve my goals and carry out my purpose. For example my (physical) health: I’ve started going to the gym 3x a week and being a parttime pescatarian in hopes to improve my health! God really convicted me late last year of taking care of my total health so that I can fulfill my calling. If I don’t take care of myself, it will be hard to really live my life to its fullest potential. And in terms of spiritual health, I’ve been pushing myself to read my Bible and pray daily, because I know how important it is in my walk with God and for the ways I serve. I’ve gained some accountability partners to help, and although I’ve had some slips already this year, as of late I’ve been consistent and I’m excited.

    • Scripture references: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Colossians 3:23-24, Proverbs 10:17

  • Better - I say, “I just want everyone to do better” quite a bit, but this year I really just want everything to be better. Not just for me, but also for those around me. Excellent is defined as “of more excellent or effective type or quality”. I will never forget when one of my best friends was encouraging and praying for me, she reminded me that I am a “daughter of excellence”. And it really stuck with me. God gives us His best. And when we do things, we are to do them as though we are doing them for God (see Colossians 3:23). And so, I believe we are to do things to the best of our ability. We should operate in and try to move with excellence, as a way to glorify God. So I really am setting my mind to doing everything I do in a better fashion and giving my all to anything my name is attached to!

    • Scripture references: Ecclesiastes 9:10, 2 Timothy 2:15, Galatians 6:9, Proverbs 16:3, 1 Corinthians 10:31

What are your 2020 words? How have you seen them working so far? I hope this encourages you to have your words in focus, and maybe decide on some if you haven’t chosen already! I’ll keep you updated as the year goes on!

Much love always,

Kumam ❤️
