Finals Affirmations Day 4 - Austin Nkanka

It’s that time of year again isn’t it? This can be your final time going through finals or your first, but I promise you its always the same. I still remember the first time I went through my first finals season in college…and my mother remembers as well (I’ll get to that in a moment). It’s something about pressure and meeting expectations all within a 7–10-day span can make you feel like life is crushing in on you. The first time I went through finals season, I nearly broke down. I had to call my mother and apologize for letting her down, letting my self down for failing. When I called my mother, I was expecting her to be disappointed, disappointed in the fact that I couldn’t deliver straight A’s.

That day my mother showed me a glimpse of God’s love. She met me with compassion and assured me that everything will be ok (she turned out to be correct as I’ve graduated and moved on in life). This story reminded me (and hopefully will remind you) that no matter what you do, there is nothing that can separate you from God’s love. He desires to lead you and comfort you during moments where life can get too stressful. God desires to help us overcome our fears. As you are gearing up for finals season, remember these three thoughts:

  1. “God has plans to prosper me”: Read those words again. Say them out loud. Repeat and believe it. Your mind will play games and make you think you have sole responsibility for your future. God knew you before your parents did. God has plans for you to do great things. He knew the battles you’d face and the pressures of life. Which leads me to my next thought… (Jeremiah 29:11)

  2. “God is with me”: Not only did God know all about finals season, God desires to be with you through it. He desires to be with His children during the most difficult seasons of their lives. Our gracious Father wants to strengthen us, encourage us, and guide us from glory to glory. As you go through rough moments, whether during finals or in general, always remember that God is with you (Psalm 18:32)

  3. “I live to please God, who loves me”: Don’t let your grades or your career define you. The pressure multiplies when we lose sight of who we really are, God’s children. Your career, your degree, or your grades are not who you are. You are enough no matter what. Let go of any expectations that are not placed on you from God and run as hard as you can. (Romans 8:38)

I hope you find encouragement in these words, but equally as important I hope you have a successful finals season!

Love,

Austin
